D’Alembert: Jean le Rond d'Alembert (1717–1783) was a prominent French mathematician, physicist, and philosopher of the Enlightenment. His major contributions include D'Alembert's principle in mechanics, the wave equation, and serving as co-editor, with Denis Diderot, of the influential Encyclopédie. He was a leading philosophe and rationalist thinker.
