Ch. -L. de Secondat Montesquieu (1689-1755), was a French philosopher, politician, and jurist. His major works include Lettres persanes (1721), Considérations sur les causes de la grandeur des Romains et de leur décadence (1734), and De l'esprit des lois (1748). He mainly worked on law, political philosophy, history, economics, and sociology.
