John Locke: John Locke (1632 – 1704) was an English philosopher and physician, and an influential thinker of Enlightenment. He is credited with founding the school of British empiricism and popularizing social contract theory. His major works include An Essay Concerning Human Understanding (1689), Two Treatises of Government (1690), Some Thoughts Concerning Education (1693), A Letter Concerning Toleration (1689).
