Johann Gottfried Herder (1744-1803), German philosopher, theologian, poet, and literary critic. His major works include Fragmente über die neuere deutsche Literatur (1767-68), Abhandlung über den Ursprung der Sprache (1772), and Ideen zur Philosophie der Geschichte der Menschheit (1784-91). He mainly worked on philosophy, theology, literary criticism, linguistics, and history.
