Ernst Mayr (1904-2005), German-American biologist, ornithologist, and philosopher of science. His major works include Systematics and the Origin of Species (1942), Animal Species and Evolution (1963), The Growth of Biological Thought (1982), and What Evolution Is (2001). His fields of specialization were evolution, systematics, ornithology, and philosophy of biology.
