John R. Searle (1932), American philosopher and emeritus professor of philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley. His major works include Speech Acts: An Essay in the Philosophy of Language (1969), Minds, Brains, and Science (1984), and The Construction of Social Reality (1995). His fields of specialization are philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, and social philosophy.
