Michel Foucault (1926-1984), French philosopher, historian of ideas, writer, political activist, and literary critic. His major works include Surveiller et punir. Naissance de la prison (1975), Histoire de la sexualité and L'Ordre du discours (1966). His fields of specialization were Philosophy of power, philosophy of knowledge, history of ideas, and social theory.
