Lycan, W.G. | Bigelow Vs Lycan, W.G. | Bigelow I 211 Combinatorial theory/Combinatorial/Lycan/Bigelow/Pargetter: Lycan (1979) has highlighted combinatorial theories as advantageous over concrete modal realism. His combinatorial theories were book theories (combined with what Lewis calls lagadonian books). combinatorial theories: theories, that characterize possible world as maximal consistent quantity (of sentences, propositions or properties). Consistency/Lycan: can easily be accepted as an unanalyzed basic concept. Bigelow/Pargetter: ditto, but only if there is nothing better. Forrest/Bigelow/Pargetter: actually has something better: (Forrest 1986a, b): he ultimately appeals even to a basic modal concept! But it is at a different level than it appears in the book theories. Basic modal concept/Lycan: with him, it lies in a primitive relation between representations. ForrestVsLycan: in contrast, offers this intralinguistic relation to an extralinguistic one: Inconsistency/Forrest: is then founded on a relation between universals (loosely said: truth-makers). And this relation between universals is what we call incompatibility. (> Forrest). |

Lycan, W.G. | Cresswell Vs Lycan, W.G. | I 113 Meaning/Brain condition/CresswellVsLycan: Problem: If meanings are mental incidents that exist in a meaning instead of having one of their own, then the problem is how they can be linked with truth. ((s) Incident or brain state are then things, and things are not true or false). |
