Vilfredo Pareto on Magical Thinking - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 102
Magical Thinking/Pareto: In Pareto's theory, magical action has a model meaning. The basic structural characteristics of the residuals are also condensed here: the unconscious-mechanical spontaneity of their taking effect and the coupling of visible action (e.g. kneeling) on the one hand and collective ideas, i.e. norms or ascriptions on the other. In the magical rite Pareto assumed the deepest and most universal layers of meaning and action. Residues: See Terminology/Pareto
.
Pareto mentions remnants from philosophical or political traditions with which he wants to examine our actions in daily life, as far as they have an effect on the structure of society. See Sociology/Pareto.
Residuals: e.g. urge to combine, need for conservation, expressive aspirations, sociality, integrity of individuals and their families, sexuality. These come from magical structures such as shamanism, fetishism, practices of asceticism, divination, sacrificial rituals, satanic cults, ritual dances, purification rites, death cult, funeral ceremonies.
