Demand: In economics, demand refers to the quantity of a good or service that consumers are willing and able to purchase at various prices. It is represented by a demand curve, which shows the inverse relationship between price and quantity demanded. See also Price, Markets.

Albert O. Hirschman on Demand - Dictionary of Arguments

Brocker I 523
Demand/Hirschman: Hirschman draws a demand curve for a single product of a particular company depending on the quality of that product, not its price. He starts from the ceteris paribus assumption and assumes that costs and price remain the same.
Brocker I 524
Hirschman thesis: the relationship between the strength of emigration due to a quality collapse and the probability of returning to the previous quality should be a nonlinear one: Without emigration there is no incentive to improve quality; in the case of very strong emigration there are no resources to implement it; in the case of moderate emigration, a return to the previous quality is most likely.(1)
Hirschman assumes the same in case of conflicts (see Terminology/Hirschman). (2)
Panther: This is an astonishing anticipation of the role of nonlinearities in explaining complex phenomena as they characterize entire branches of science today.
